Your toilet is one of the most important fixtures in your home, so it is important to keep it in great condition. Luckily, a few common toilet issues have simple solutions. Here are four toilet repairs that you can do on your own:

  • The flush handle on your toilet is loose. If you find that your handle seems loose or appears broken, carefully remove the lid to your toilet tank. Tightening the nut opposite of the handle inside of the tank will usually solve this problem.

  • Your toilet seat moves when you sit down. A loose seat can be uncomfortable and even dangerous. Find the two plastic bolts connecting your seat to the bowl. Turning these bolts clockwise, while holding the nut under the porcelain bowl with your fingers or pliers, will tighten the seat. Always make sure you have your seat positioned correctly before you begin tightening the bolts.
  • Your toilet is clogged. A clogged toilet is one of the most common toilet repairs. For most clogs, you will only need a plunger to clear the blockage. We suggest slowly setting the plunger inside the bowl to prevent the water from splashing out or overflowing. Once the plunger is in the bottom of your bowl, pushing the plunger in and out will push water through your pipes and clear the clog. If you have repeated clogging, an indication of a more serious toilet repair, don’t hesitate to give us a call.
  • Your toilet is continuously running. One remedy is to examine the flapper. This is the rubber piece covering the opening at the bottom of your tank. You will want to make sure the flapper is sealing correctly after each flush. Sometimes sediment or its own chain will cause it not to seal completely.
