Fixing a dripping faucet is, most of the time, a quick and easy fix that DIYers can handle on their own. However, if you cannot fix the drip, it’s always best to call a professional, as your issue may be more severe.

How to Fix a Dripping Faucet

  • First, you want to be sure your water supply to the dripping faucet is completely shut off. Most faucets have a shut-off valve under the sink. All you need to do is turn it until it is tight. Then, turn the faucet on to release any remaining water.
  • The process to remove the handle of the dripping faucet involves a bit more work. This can be tricky, mainly since the screw is usually located on the back of the faucet. You’ll need to use a screwdriver or Allen wrench to detach it and lift it off.
  • Use your faucet’s make and model number to determine which faucet stem or faucet cartridge you’ll need. This regulates the flow of cold and hot water, and this is what you’ll be replacing. Next, loosen the packing nut and set it aside. Finally, examine the O rings to ensure they are not corroded or worn; if they are, these need to be replaced, too.
  • Insert the new cartridge or stem, making sure it is correctly aligned. Then, reattach the faucet handle, and test both the hot and cold water.
  • Your dripping faucet problem should be solved!
