Some plumbing problems aren’t as big of a deal as others. Minor issues can often be handled on your own. For a clogged drain, there are a few different solutions you can try before reaching out to a plumber. Here are a few unclogging methods to try if you have a clogged drain in your home.

What to Do if You Have a Clogged Drain

  • Use a plunger. Plungers can be used for clogged sinks or bathtubs, not just toilets. Most of the time, there’s a small water buildup around the drain when you have a clog, but if there’s no standing water around your clogged drain, you’ll want to add a couple of inches of water to assist with suction. Make sure the plunger you use fully covers the drain.
  • Remove the obstruction on your own. Sometimes, whatever is clogging your drain can be removed by hand. When faced with a clog, start by removing the stopper. If you see a clear obstruction, such as hair buildup in a bathtub drain, remove it with your hands or pliers. This may handle your clogged drain without any major interventions.
  • Pour boiling water. This is an especially helpful technique for hardened soap scum in a sink. Carefully pour boiling water down your drain if you can’t see what’s clogging your drain. Be sure to pay attention to any standing water. If the water only contributes to a fuller sink, stop pouring so as not to overflow your sink.
