Your residential plumbing system is one of the most important systems in your home. Every time you turn on the tap to wash your hands, get a drink, wash the dishes, or fill up a pot, you have your plumbing system to thank. It’s essential to keep it in good condition for your daily convenience and to ensure the system lasts as long as possible. With that in mind, here are three residential plumbing hacks you can start using today:
- Use food coloring to detect a leaky toilet flapper. Remove the tank lid, put a few drops of food coloring inside, and wait 20–30 minutes without flushing. If the color shows up in the toilet bowl after the wait, you have a leaky flapper than needs to be replaced by a plumber to save water.
- Use white vinegar to remove mineral deposits from showerhead. If there are hard mineral deposits on your showerhead, this can affect the water pressure and leave your showerhead looking dirty. You can remove these deposits by putting the shower head in a plastic bag filled with white vinegar overnight. After it’s done soaking, you can even scrub the showerhead with a soft toothbrush.
- Use dish soap to break up minor clogs. The key word here is “minor.” This method can be useful for grease, soap scum, or soft organic material, but shouldn’t be used for more severe or deep clogs. You can use a couple of tablespoons of dish soap in a clogged sink or toilet, let it sit for 10 to 15 minutes, and slowly pour hot water over the top to slowly dissolve the clog.
